Press Release . . . . . .
Irving TX (August 1, 2007) - BancTec, a leading global provider of advanced, high-volume document and data processing solutions, significantly cut repair time for failed circuit boards after installing a PinPoint II universal tester from DiagnoSYS Systems, Inc. at its Irving, Texas service facility. Parts that previously had to be sent out to manufacturers for repair can now be restored in-house, in much less time, and with a higher level of confidence in the repair, thus improving the service BancTec provides its customers.
BancTec, whose solutions are used to process some 50 million documents a day, provides high-speed transports and scanners that convert paper documents into electronic images for automated processing. Its customers include the l O largest banks in the United States, government agencies, and other large, information-intensive clients.
With a large service operation for both its own and other manufacturers' equipment, BancTec must sometimes send printed circuit boards to manufacturers for repair, a process that can take weeks before the board is returned to active inventory. Adding the DiagnoSYS tester has enabled BancTec to keep most repairs in-house, as well as to reduce actual repair time.
In addition, BancTec has largely eliminated "trial and error" repairs, in which technicians attempt to make repairs with the boards in the test machine but sometimes miss correcting certain faults. The improved repair efficiency and shorter turnaround times have also enabled BancTec to increase capacity.
"When a technician finds a defective part in any piece of equipment, we ship a repaired board from stock and repair the defective board to replenish our inventory," said John Dosing, test engineer, BancTec. "With the PinPoint we are no longer at the mercy of the manufacturer since we can isolate the fault and make the repair ourselves, thus putting the board back in stock within days, not weeks."
Dosing developed a library of test and repair schemes for 152 different boards from various manufacturers. "When we receive a board we've never seen, we compare the time needed to build a new test and do the repair ourselves with the turnaround time for sending it out. We can develop tests for simple boards in about seven hours, and do the repair work in 1-1 /2 hours. We download data to a PC to develop the test, and then bring it back to the PinPoint II to run it. When the test is complete, a technician performs the repair." Generating tests for larger, more intricate boards, such as image boards, can take up to six days, while the first repair may take up to 48 hours. Dosing said he can fine tune the test over a period of days.
"Often, when working with new boards, we find areas that are not being tested as thoroughly as we need. In addition, some boards have chips that are not in the standard library," said Dosing. "Now, as our expertise expands, we can create additional tests to increase testing speed, as well as complete more passes to generate different patterns. By changing the speed and sending more data through the chip,
we achieve a much more robust test in much less time."
